What is a School Resource Officer (SRO)?

A school resource officer is a sworn law enforcement officer pursuant to the requirement of any jurisdiction of this State, who has completed basic course of instruction for School Resource Officer as recognized by the National Association of School Resource Officer or the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and who is assigned to the school district to have as a primary duty the responsibility to act as a law enforcement officer, advisor, and teacher for the school district. In order to provide a safe learning environment for all students, the board supports the use of school resource officers to expand school safety efforts through prevention, diversion, and social support in and around the school/community.
