Sumter, SC – May 30, 2024 – Furman Middle School is thrilled to announce that Mrs. Octavia Green has been named the 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Green’s exemplary dedication to education and her outstanding contributions to the school community have also earned her the prestigious Shirley Tomlin Award. Additionally, she has been recognized as one of three finalists for the 2024-2025 Sumter School District Teacher of the Year, with the winner to be announced in July.
Mrs. Green’s educational journey is marked by a steadfast commitment to academic excellence and student development. She holds a Master of Arts in Education with a specialization in Administration and Supervision and a Master of Arts in Teaching Degree in Science Education. Her academic foundation is further strengthened by a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry.
With over 22 years of experience in the field of education, Mrs. Green has served in various capacities, including her current role as a 7th Grade Science Educator. Her previous roles include Instructional Science Coach, Teacher Mentor, and Science Teacher for both middle and high school students. Her extensive experience and passion for science education have made her an invaluable asset to Furman Middle School and the broader educational community.
Mrs. Green is an active member of several professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, South Carolina Science Council, and the South Carolina Educators Association. She has also held leadership positions, such as 6th-8th Science Department Chair and District Title I Coordinator, demonstrating her commitment to advancing educational standards and practices.
Throughout her career, Mrs. Green has been driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact on her students’ lives. She describes teaching as more than just imparting knowledge; it is a ministry where she can guide, mentor, and inspire students to overcome their challenges and achieve their full potential. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes creating a positive and supportive learning environment, fostering respect, and encouraging lifelong learning.
In addition to her professional achievements, Mrs. Green is deeply involved in her community. As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, she participates in various volunteer activities, including voter registration drives, youth programs, and domestic violence awareness events. Her commitment to service extends to organizing STEM days, volunteering at local food pantries, and supporting educational initiatives in Jamaica.
