STUDENT SERVICES
Counseling
At Furman Middle School, we are dedicated to supporting the academic, social, and emotional well-being of our students. Our team of three school counselors, each assigned to a specific grade level, plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive services that address the unique needs of every student.
Our counselors offer a variety of supports, including:
Individual Responsive Counseling: Students can receive one-on-one counseling for personal challenges, social concerns, or any issues that may be affecting their well-being or academic performance. Our counselors provide a safe and supportive environment where students can talk through their concerns and find helpful solutions.
Schedule and Academic Planning: Counselors work closely with students to plan their academic journey, ensuring they are taking the right courses and staying on track for success. Whether it's adjusting schedules or discussing future academic goals, our counselors are there to guide students every step of the way.
Small Group and Class-Level Guidance Sessions: To address common concerns or topics relevant to student growth, our counselors facilitate small group sessions and class-level guidance lessons. These sessions cover a variety of important topics, such as conflict resolution, study skills, goal setting, and building healthy relationships.
With each grade having a dedicated counselor, students receive focused support tailored to their specific developmental stage. Our goal is to ensure that every student at Furman Middle School feels supported, empowered, and prepared for success both inside and outside the classroom. Career Counseling
At Furman Middle School, we recognize the importance of preparing our students for future career paths and helping them explore their interests and aspirations. Our career counseling services are designed to provide students with valuable exposure to various career options, as well as hands-on learning experiences that ignite their passions.
Key components of our career counseling program include:
Career Exposure: Our counselors facilitate opportunities for students to learn about different careers through workshops, guest speakers, and presentations. These sessions introduce students to a wide array of professions, helping them understand the skills and education needed for each path. By exposing students to diverse career fields, we encourage them to consider their interests and strengths as they begin to envision their futures.
Field Learning Experiences: We believe in the value of experiential learning, which is why we offer field trips and real-world learning experiences that connect students to potential career paths. Whether visiting local businesses, industries, or colleges, these outings allow students to see professionals in action and gain insights into various work environments.
Individualized Career Planning: Our counselors work with students to create personalized career plans based on their interests, skills, and academic goals. This includes guidance on course selections that align with their future aspirations, as well as information on internships and volunteer opportunities that provide practical experience.
Skill Development Workshops: We also conduct workshops focused on essential skills that are critical for future success, such as resume writing, interview techniques, and networking. These workshops equip students with the tools they need to confidently pursue their career interests.
Through our comprehensive career counseling services, Furman Middle School is committed to empowering students to explore their passions, develop their skills, and plan for successful futures. We strive to create a supportive environment where students can discover their potential and set meaningful career goals. Call Altovise Perry at 803-481-8519 ext. 115 for more information.
Mental Health Counseling
At Furman Middle School, we understand the vital role mental health plays in the overall well-being and success of our students. To support their emotional and psychological needs, we offer mental health counseling services aimed at providing students with the resources they need to thrive.
Our mental health services include:
Individual Counseling: Students have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a qualified mental health professional. This confidential space allows them to discuss personal challenges, anxiety, depression, or any issues impacting their emotional health. Our counselors are trained to provide support and coping strategies tailored to each student's unique situation.
Crisis Intervention: In times of immediate emotional distress, our counselors are available to provide crisis intervention services. This support ensures that students receive the help they need during critical moments and are connected to additional resources as necessary.
Group Counseling: We also offer small group counseling sessions that focus on specific topics such as stress management, grief and loss, peer relationships, and self-esteem. These sessions provide students with a supportive environment to share experiences, learn from one another, and develop coping skills.
Collaboration with Parents: We believe that parental involvement is essential in the mental health counseling process. To ensure that students receive the best support, mental health counseling services require written parent permission before they can be provided. Our counselors work closely with parents to communicate progress and involve them in their child’s mental health journey.
Through our comprehensive mental health counseling services, Furman Middle School is dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive environment where students can address their mental health needs and develop resilience. We encourage open communication and collaboration with families to ensure that our students receive the best care possible. Call 803-481-8519 ext. 116 for more information.
